Welcome

The Junior League of Detroit focuses on elevating the lives of children. Our trained volunteers fundraise and use our financial resources to initiate and participate in community-based collaborative partnerships that work to broaden the educational, cultural, recreational and health opportunities for children in the city of Detroit.

We are seeking women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving our community. Interested in joining?

Project Literacy
In March 2008, the JLD Membership approved an early childhood literacy signature project. A Signature Project is developed by the JLD to meet a need in the community. This project resulted from the input received from community stakeholders within the 48215 zip code, including principals and parent representatives from the area elementary schools, which detailed the need for greater access to reading programs, literacy aimed activities, and materials & programs to train and engage parents/guardians in family literacy.

Our volunteers work to design and implement literacy-based programs for children ages Pre-K through 5th Grade that include Reading Events, Kids' Book Clubs and more. In addition, our volunteers developed school Resource Centers for children and their parents/caregivers and provide support for existing tutoring programs. We developed a program of enrichment and learning activities at the Montieth Branch Library for Saturdays---reading with children, storytelling, author visits---providing limitless hands-on opportunities for our members that benefit the community.
